Exercise – Addictive?

by Carol Kicinski on November 11, 2009

OK.

so this is the goal:

e5.jpg
(flat tummy, no love handles, thin thighs, looking like I’m 20 when I’m…well, not!)
Admittedly this is a superficial goal. I should be concerned with things like good health, vitality, quality of life, blah, blah, blah. But let’s face it. Does it really matter what the motivation as long as the results are achieved?
Apparently since I already eat well and do all that other healthy stuff it’s time for me to start {groan} exercising.
I have had lots of people telling me recently that I will become positively addicted to exercise once I start. I find that VERY hard to believe.
I have, at one time or another in my life, been addicted to lots of things.
like:
e35.jpg
gluten filled bagels with lox
e21.jpg
General Hospital
e22.jpg
e3.jpg
lung polution masquerading as sexy
e26.jpg
tea
which lead to harder things
like
e25.jpg
coffee
e23.jpg
and…
e24.jpg
bad boys on motorcycles
So I ask you – can this slacker gluten free gal reverse the effects of age and her checkered past and replace dubious addictions with a healthy one like exercise?
I am on a mission to find an exercise routine I can tolerate, like, even, dare I say – become addicted too? Feel free to follow me in my quest.
Suggestions are highly encouraged. (I’m begging you – give me suggestions!)
Wish me luck!

That's a difficult question. How can exercise be addicting unless it's a dance class for me. :)

About a year ago I was in the same boat and I took up running. I am now totally addicted. I wrote a post awhile back in fact on how to learn to like it.

Whatever you choose, create some goals for yourself that are achievable, accomplishing things helps continue.

Results will take some time but then start snowballing. Good luck!

kickboxing, zumba(the 2000's version of jazzercise), I myself get addicted to strength training, feeling the biceps get stronger is awesome. Whatever it is, start with something that you enjoy!! I've just started yoga and I find it addicting!

One word: tennis! I started playing tennis about 6 years ago and quickly became addicted. This, from a girl who thought using the blender was considered exercise! Without doing anything else except playing tennis 2-3 time/week, I lost 2 dress sizes in 6 months. Plus, it's a very social sport and you can meet a lot of fun people.

I've been thinking the same thing about myself: I need to start exercising again. I'm not a runner, but have got to find something to get myself moving more. Love the pictures you posted – great inspiration! Looking forward to hearing how it goes for you. Good luck!

Yoga! Specifically Iyengar yoga which will make you stronger than you ever imagined, and give you great arms, a strong core, and the famous yoga butt. But it will also effect your mind in ways I can't explain, just that it made me calmer, more confident, and stronger. You could also throw in a weekly pilates class for really fast results on your abs as well.

love all the photos you've chosen to go with this post, but I'm afraid I can't help you much. I am notoriously anti-exercise. I do pilates almost religiously each week, otherwise my back would seize up and I'd be useless. Apart from that, how about swimming with a treat of a sauna/jacuzzi afterwards? very best of luck, I would love my other half to become addicted to exercising, so will follow your progress with interest.
Much love, Charlotte

I can't say that I am addicted to exercise but I do exercise since it’s good for my health.
Over the years, I did many types of exercises: tennis, running, dancing, Tae Bo and also other different exercise videos. I also had memberships to a Gym.

My preference is the exercise DVD, MELT IT OFF, 4 complete workouts with Mitch Gaylord the winner of 4 Olympic medals. I also enjoy taking walks.

I think if you want results like in the picture you posted, you will have to commit to exercise about 40 minutes a day and keep your amount of calories in check. And once you have the results you will have to exercise and eat right to keep the results. Good luck!

I have fallen in love with CrossFit and it has completely changed my life. I have actually changed my career path to become a coach. I used to hate running and performed pointless circuits at the gym. Now I can't get enough of the high intensity CrossFit workouts that give constant variety (they mix gymnastics, weight training, and cardio-type exercise for endless variety), actual measrable, repeatable, and observable results, and allow me to workout with my friends and family regardless of skill level because it's infinitely scalable to each individual. Trust me. It is worth checking out. Google CrossFit to find one near you. The proof is in the results. You can achieve those personal appearance goals, but even more satsfying will be your first pullup!

Haha…General Hospital….I love Luke and Laura!

I'm addicted to yoga now, and I find that I keep going even on days when I don't want to get out of bed because it puts me in such a relaxed state of mind. I do it because it's good for me mentally, but it has the added benefit of toning my abs and I can now do 20+ pushups without even breaking a sweat. I think it depends on finding the right class/teacher to match you though.

I'm a bit dubious about the exercise being addictive bit – I know that I always somehow manage to break whatever good exercise habits I adopt without too much difficulty!

2 years ago I got an elliptical machine for Christmas. I gradually started using it. I had been a gymnast as a child, but had not really exercised regularly since I was 16 or 17. I am 37 now. I started running on occasion about 1.5 years ago; then last Dec/Jan, I really got into running. Now I am addicted. I just completed my first half marathon & am going to train for a full marathon in May 2010. I love running now & am cranky when I miss a run! I have run 878 miles this year and hope to hit 1000 before 12/31/2009.

You can find something that works for you. Try a bunch of things out.

As weird as it is to type after years of being the girl who always thought it would take a psycho wielding a machine gun in one hand and a chainsaw in the other to get me to do it – I have gotten hooked on running on my elliptical. Its a chance for my to pop on a podcast/audiobook/loud music and just let my brain wander for a bit. I've been sick for several months, and one of the big things I'm looking forward to is finally being able to get back to it. It IS addictive!

I've always been anti-exercise, really. I'd dread going to the gym, and would only run hard on the treadmill if there was someone faster, fitter, etc running next to me. Then came indoor soccer. I'd never played until I was grown – but there are amateur teams out there! I have played now for 8 years, and while I'm not "good", it doesn't matter. It appeals to my competitive nature. I'm addicted. And in order for me to get faster and better at soccer, I have found that running helps! I now wake up at 5am every morning to sneak in 30 minutes of running, bicycling, or strength training, before I shower and head off to work (I am in the office at 7am)…but that's a recent thing. I do it that early so I don't have a chance to talk myself out of it. And I feel better afterwards!

Classes… I go to a lot of different ones each week so I don't get bored… Spin, Cardio, Yoga, Pilates… all fun. I also like training for a specific event (I do Triathalons) I think this helps you stay motivated…

I second both t-tapp and cross fit. T-tapp if you don't think you will make it to the gym on a regular basis (t-tapp you get on dvd) and CrossFit if you enjoy a competitive atmosphere. Both work more on strength training than cardio. Cardio has been shown to be pretty useless for weight loss, while an increase in muscle mass gives real results. Plus you get hotter with all those toned muscles.

Yoga Now DVD series is great. You can do it at home. They have 10, 30 & 50 minute videos. Stretching, strength and cardio. Also Jazzercise can't be beat. I used to be an instructor. The only thing these two things won't do is turn back the clock and make us 20. If it did I would never stop. But they are a lot of fun.

If you like to dance, find a zumba class. Its so much fun that you'll forget you're working out until you leave and are drenched and sweat and then you can cheer yourself for burning 600 calories by shaking your money maker.
I also love yoga, which will tone you up…but zumba will make you burn calories. Also, reduce your meat consumption a little and add an extra helping of veggies.
Good luck!

I have to say, I'm completely addicted to Zumba. I've seen measurable results and I love it so much I go 4 times a week. I used to hate exercise and can't stand the treadmill or stationary bikes. I thought something was wrong with me until I tried this. :) It's exercise disguised as fun in my opinion.

OK – Here's the trick: When you were a kid, did you "exercise" or "play"? I know what I did. I played and played and played until my mom practically had to drag me in by the hair to feed me dinner.

So why, as adults, do we use the horrible word "exercise"? When did we stop "playing" and start exercising?

My advice to you us find something you love to do and do it – dancing, bicycle riding, jumping rope (yes, remember that?), skipping, hopscotch?? Bowling?? It doesn't matter. Just DON'T call it the "e" word!!
