Skillet Roasted Apples with Salted Caramel Sauce

Christmas is less than two weeks away! And while I know you’re probably being bombarded with delicious sweets – cakes, cookies, pies, and more – I have a very simple dessert recipe for you that can be made any day of the year, holiday or not: Skillet Roasted Apples with Salted Caramel Sauce.

This is a great back-up recipe. It’s the kind of recipe that is there for you when you accidentally burn the cookies because the kids distract you with questions about Santa. It’s the kind of recipe that is there for you when that cake fails to rise for no apparent reason. It’s the kind of recipe that is there for you when you’ve purchased far too many apples at the store because they’re in season and you need to do something with them before they rot! And last but certainly not least, it’s the kind of recipe that will make your home smell like home, sweet home.

Now, if that doesn’t get you to want to make this recipe, perhaps the fact that it’s made with simple, accessible ingredients will be the convincing factor. It’s made with ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen – butter, cinnamon, salt, sugar (I used Wholesome Organic Sugar) – plus fresh apples and heavy cream. Top it with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, and you’re good to go!

Ingredients

For the apples:

  • 1 tablespoon butter , softened
  • 4 large apples , cored, and sliced ¼-inch thick
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoon melted butter

For the salted caramel sauce:

  • ½ cup Wholesome Organic Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ½ teaspoon kosher or sea salt
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving , if desired

Instructions

Make the apples:

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
  • Butter the bottom of a cast iron skillet with the softened butter. Arrange the apple slices in a concentric circle, overlapping slightly. Sprinkle with the cinnamon and drizzle with melted butter. Cover the pan with foil and roast in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until the apples are tender.

Make the salted caramel sauce:

  • Place the sugar and water in a heavy saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring just until the sugar melts. Once the sugar has melted, do not stir any longer. Cook for about 8 minutes or until the sugar is the color of an old penny. Gently swirl the pan occasionally to ensure even caramelization. Carefully add the cream and whisk until smooth. Remove from the heat and whisk in the butter and salt. Let cool slightly, then drizzle over the apples and serve. Top with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired.

    This is a good recipe. I made some changes. I only had maple sugar so I used that. After the apples were done, I put the caramel sauce over them and put them back in the oven that was turned off. I put quite a bit of sauce on the apples because they looked dry. Came out great.

    Any substitute for the dairy in the caramel sauce?

      You can try it with dairy free buttery sticks in place of the butter, and dairy free creamer (that’s the same consistency as heavy cream) or full-fat coconut milk in place of the heavy cream.

    I don’t own a cast-iron skillet. Can I use a casserole dish?

      Yes, just keep an eye on it and check it every so often to ensure it doesn’t overcook, or add additional time if it’s undercooked. Cast-iron skillets hold heat differently than a glass or aluminum baking dish, so the cooking time might vary a bit if you use something other than a cast-iron skillet.
